Abstract
The article examines the problem of studying "frozen conflicts" in the context of the theory of political realism. Using the example of using the balance of power theory in the field of forming European security, it is proposed to expand and structure the research tools for analyzing "frozen conflicts". The practical application of the theory is shown on the example of the Transnistrian conflict, which allows for a better understanding of the mechanisms that ensure the preservation of peace in the region and also to use the experience of the Transnistrian settlement in resolving the Ukrainian crisis
